Chips & Special Gameweeks

Chip strategy

When to save your Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain — and which gameweeks to watch.

This week's expert roundup — curated 5 Aug 2026, ask Claude to refresh

Rotation risks to watch

Sunderland's boss is expected to rotate heavily to manage a packed early schedule, making their assets riskier holds from Gameweek 3 onward. At Chelsea, a new manager and a crowded attacking group mean starting XI roles are genuinely unclear heading into Gameweek 1 — worth waiting for team news rather than guessing. Leeds face an unusually brutal opening (away at Arsenal, then City by Gameweek 3), so their defenders carry real risk early on.

Wildcard timing — the consensus

Opinion is split into two camps. Some managers prefer wildcarding early (Gameweek 4–6) to react fast to which new signings and promoted-team players are actually delivering. The more common view favours Gameweek 8–9, right after the first international break — by then there's a reliable six-gameweek form sample, and the break itself tends to shake up prices, creating good value to exploit. Either way, most experts agree: don't let the first Wildcard sit unused much past Gameweek 19, or you lose it.

Bench Boost / Wildcard combo

A pattern several experts flag: play Bench Boost early (GW1–2) while your bench still has GW1 hype picks in it, then Wildcard immediately after to reinvest that bench money into your starting XI — a clean way to sequence the two chips rather than using them in isolation.

Chip guide

Wildcard

Unlimited free transfers for one gameweek — use it to fully reshape your squad. One is available for the first half of the season (GW1–19), the second for the back half. Best played just before a run of good fixtures, or right before a Double Gameweek so your new signings benefit from it.

Free Hit

Unlimited transfers for a single gameweek only — your squad reverts afterwards. Ideal for Blank Gameweeks, when several of your players have no fixture at all, letting you field a full XI from teams that are actually playing.

Bench Boost

Your bench players' points count too, for one gameweek. Best saved for a Double Gameweek where as many of your 15 as possible have two fixtures — maximises the extra points from a strong bench.

Triple Captain

Your captain's points are tripled instead of doubled. Best used on a premium, nailed-on player during a Double Gameweek against two favourable fixtures — avoid using it into a single tough away game.
